Online shopping has increased this year
|
Shoppers spent a record £831,000 online in just one minute yesterday, 6 December
In what was dubbed as “Mega Monday” shoppers pounced onto the internet in order to purchase gifts in time for delivery before Christmas Day. Internet sales peaked at 1.15pm.
In last year’s busiest minute, which was on 7 December, £732,000 was spent online. IMRG, the UK trade association for online retailers, announced that £0.5bn had been spent on online purchases between Sunday 5 December and Monday 6 December. It is estimated that a total of £12.4bn will be spent during November and December for the Christmas period.
The boost in online sales has been aided by the recent weather conditions, which have kept most shoppers away from the high streets. eBay attributed their record-breaking sales figures to the weather after they announced that sales on the UK site had increased by 18% in comparison to the same day last year with around 17 gifts being bought every second.
The most popular items being bought online for Christmas this year are the Mini Micro T-bar Scooter, the Nintendo Wii Fit Plus game, Lego’s Winter Toy Workshop and the Apple iPod Touch.
