Eight out of 10 newborns are being breastfed

UK data has revealed that more new mothers are choosing to breastfeed their babies at least once after their birth
The UK data, released by the NHS Information Centre, has revealed that eight out of 10 newborns are now being breastfed, which has risen since 1990 when the average was six out of 10.
Although experts are pleased by the news and continue to raise awareness that “breast is best”, the information does not reveal whether new mums are breastfeeding their babies for the recommended six month duration.
The Royal College of Midwives has issued its concern that mothers are not being shown enough support in the encouragement of breastfeeding for the recommended length of time. Jane Munro, speaking on behalf of the College, said, ‘We do not want to see the ground we have gained lost.
‘We know that many women stop breastfeeding when they leave hospital. This is why it is so important that they are able to get advice and support from their midwife, and that there are enough midwives with the time to offer these women the help they need.’
