Bullies that hang around the toilets mean that children are 'holding it in'
Dirt and bullies mean that many children avoid using the toilet during school hours
A survey of 300 children found that children do not like using the school toilets as they are dirty and a place where bullies often hang out.
The survey reported that 40 per cent of female participants admitted to ‘holding it in’ so that they did not have to go to the toilet.
And 16 per cent of male participants reported ‘bad things’ happening in the toilets that made them wary of going.
The children stated that they wanted to see their school toilets cleaned more frequently and CCTV cameras removed so as to protect privacy.
Christine Blower, general secretary of the National Union of Teachers, said, ‘The provision of clean and well maintained toilets is an indication to young people that they are respected by their schools.’
