A new report has called for a ban on unmanned tanning salons after a school girl suffers 70 per cent burns
A ten-year-old girl suffered burns over 70 per cent of her body after spending 16 minutes on a sunbed, resulting in a new report calling for a ban on unmanned tanning salons. The report from the Committee on Medical Aspects of Radiation in the Environment (COMARE) is calling for England and Wales to follow the example of Scotland, who are introducing a ban on unmanned salons and a minimum age of 18.
There are also calls for all tanning salons to be licensed, currently there is no government regulation on the use of sunbeds, which are linked to around 100 deaths a year in the UK. Gill Nuttall, founder of skin cancer charity Factor 50, said ‘It’s outrageous that a child can use these machines. The rays from them can be 15 times stronger than the sun, and young skin is very delicate and easily damaged, there’s no doubt that sunbeds will damage your skin and increase the chances of skin cancer. The call for a ban is long overdue, and if I had my way, they’d be banned altogether’.
