The WCA assesses those who claim DLA

Charities have complained that the new sickness benefit tests are unfair
The Working Capability Assessment (WCA) assesses those who claim disability benefits as they are unable to work. The assessment then declares whether they are in fact ‘fit for work.’
The government have revealed that these tests have found that most of the claimants are actually well enough to go to work.
However, charities, such as MS Society and Parkinson’s UK, have urged for changes to be made so that the test is fairer for those with illnesses where symptoms vary over time.
The charities have published a report for consideration as part of Professor Malcolm Harrington’s independent review of the WCA. In the report the charities have recommended 12 changes for how to make the assessment fairer.
Simon Gillespie, chief executive of the MS Society, said, ‘As charities, we have been inundated by concerns from people living with a long-term health condition who have wrongly been found fit for work.’
