Parents miss out on mealtimes due to work commitments

Children are left suffering as parents are forced to take on extra work during the recession
Children’s charity I CAN has found that up to 72 per cent of parents have had to find more work to help make ends meet during this financially difficult time.
As a result parents are feeling too exhausted to talk and play with their children as they did before. The study revealed that 35 per cent of parents are blaming their increasing workloads for rarely having time to talk with their children these days.
Nearly 40 per cent of parents also admitted that they are often missing out on mealtimes with their children due to work commitments.
Kate Freeman, I CAN Communication advisor, said, ‘Parents want the best for their children and are well-informed about how important it is to chat with children in order to nurture their communication skills. They’re aware of the key milestones at the different ages and stages of development – but their best efforts are being hampered by the recession’s impact on their working hours.’
