As the nights draw in, homeowners have been warned to watch out for the would-be burglar
Now that the clocks have gone back, the early darkness can prove all too tempting for the opportunist thief, claims Halifax Home Insurance.
The insurance company have revealed that they saw burglary claims rise by 63 per cent during the winter months last year.
They also found that the average cost of winter burglary last year racked up to £2,623.
Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager for Halifax Home Insurance, said, ‘Year on year we typically see far more burglaries occurring during the winter months.’
He also added, ‘Burglars will tend to look for homes that lack even the basic security measures, so a few simple cost effective steps can go a long way to avoiding a break in.’
Halifax Home Insurance recommends the following tips to protect the home as the nights draw in:
1. Keep valuable items out of sight from windows and doors.
2. Fit visible, key operated locks on windows and doors and keep them locked.
3. Never risk leaving your spare key outside, as burglars know where to look.
4. Consider installing a safe so as to store valuable items, such as credit cards and personal documents.
