The storyline, which sees Ronnie swap her baby with Kat’s newborn after discovering that her own baby had died has caused an outcry from some viewers who are criticising the ‘deranged’ portrayal of mother’s who are victims of cot death.
The television soap, which receives ratings of over nine million per episode, has said that the plot was filmed with the guidance of the Foundation for Sudden Infant Deaths (FSID) so as to ensure that the topic was approached with caution.
Bryan Kirkwood, EastEnders’ producer, said, ‘We appreciate that this is a challenging storyline and have taken care to ensue viewers were aware of the content in advance of transmission. We also provide action line numbers at the end of each show, offering advice and support to those who have been affected by the issue.’
The BBC has since announced that the story will be resolved earlier than planned as a result of the complaints that the show has received.
