Not paying interns could be illegal

The majority of companies are unaware of the laws when it comes to hiring interns
With youth unemployment at a high, internships have become a popular way for young people to gain experience in their desired field.
In fact, many young people will struggle to get a foot in the door unless they have gained experience by working as an intern or on work experience.
However, some companies have taken advantage of the fact that these young people are so desperate to gain experience that they offer short term positions for little or no remuneration.
In a survey, conducted by Internocracy, it was revealed that the majority of employers were unaware that not paying interns could be illegal.
The study, which also asked those who had previously been on internships, found that 21 per cent of those questioned had completed their internship without any payment. A further 22 per cent admitted that they only received payment towards their expenses.
