A rise in women seeking help for their damaged hair after using hair extensions has led a top hair specialist to call for hair extensions to be banned
Steve O’Brien, a trichologist at the London Centre of Trichology, revealed that there had been a 15 per cent increase over the last two years.
Many women use hair extensions after seeing celebrities, such as Cheryl Cole, turning their short hair into long locks over night.
Mr O’Brien says that it doesn’t help that celebrities make wearing extensions and maintaining them look easy.
It is the extensions that require glue that cause the most problems as when it is time to remove them, the strength of the glue rips the hair from the roots, causing permanent damage.
The London Centre of Trichology used to get about 30 people each month but that has now increased to over 50 patients, and it’s still increasing.
Natalie Rowe, who runs a business providing hair extensions and wigs to salons and hairdressers, said, ‘I’d say at least two or three [people] a week are coming in saying “Look what can I do with my hair? It’s completely ruined.”’
