Volcano ash may cause short-term symptoms

UK health experts have advised people to stay indoors if they start to have respiratory problems due to volcanic ash from Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) have stressed only very small amounts of ash particles are likely to reach ground level in the UK and this should not cause serious harm.
However ash can affect breathing and irritate the eyes and skin, so people may want to stay inside if they experience these symptoms.
People with existing conditions such as chronic bronchitis, asthma and emphysema may feel the effects more, and are recommended to carry medication or inhalers as a precaution.
The British Lung Foundation have backed the advice, spokesman Professor Malcolm Green said, ‘We would advice people living with a lung condition in affected areas to carry their medication as a precaution as they may experience a short-term worsening of symptoms’.
The HPA also assure that symptoms will be short term.
UK airports reopened today, for the first time in six days, however people should contact their airlines before travelling as not all flights are operating.
Airspace in Germany and Ireland remains restricted. It is thought it will be a few days before regular flight schedules resume.
