Many people are checking their social networking profiles at work

Social networking websites are costing the economy £14bn a year in lost work time, according to new research
Research carried out by myjobgroup.co.uk estimated that two million workers spend an hour at work each day tweeting and messaging friends on social networking sites Facebook, Twitter and Myspace. More than half of all UK workers spend half an hour a day on the sites.
A tenth of respondents to the survey claimed that this made them more productive, while just 14% admitted it made them less productive.
The survey also found that a third of survey participants wanted business to ban staff from using social networking sites.
Lee Fayer, managing director of mygroup.co.uk, says, ‘Whilst we are certainly not kill-joys, people spending over an hour a day in work time on the likes of Facebook are seriously hampering companies.’
Fayer also advised companies that they should monitor the use of social networking sites during work hours and ensure that their employees are not abusing their freedom of access to these sites.
