Geneva tops as the most expensive city
Geneva has been found to be the most expensive holiday destination

Geneva has become the most expensive holiday location, reveals a new survey

At a time when holiday prices are expected to drop after the peak summer season, Geneva’s hotel prices have been found to be the most expensive compared to other cities around the world.

The survey found that tourists in Geneva should expect to fork out an average £155 per night.

The Hotel Price Index, Hotels.com, found that Monte Carlo, the most expensive destination in 2009, has now dropped to second place with hotel rooms costing an average £152 per night.

Johannesburg, the host for 2010’s world cup, has also reportedly increased their hotel prices.

At the other end of the scale, Riga was found to be the city with the least expensive accommodation options, with hotel rooms averaging at a bargain of £52 per night.

Bangkok, Warsaw and Budapest were also found to be amongst the cheaper global travel destinations.

Alison Couper, Global Communications Director of Hotels.com, said, ‘2010 has proven a fascinating year already for UK travellers holidaying abroad, as hotel prices have had to contend with everything from a financial crisis to the ash cloud. Our top five lists are intended to inform travellers and point out where they can get the best value for money.’

The Hotel Price Index found that the most expensive city destinations are:

1. Geneva
2. Monte Carlo
3. New York
4. Moscow
5. Johannesburg

On the other hand, they found that the cheapest city breaks are:

1. Riga
2. Tallinn
3. Bangkok
4. Warsaw
5. Budapest
