Anyone with gum disease should take it seriously as it may cause coronary heart disease

New research by German scientists has shown that a genetic mutation may link gum disease and heart attacks.
Scientists have been aware for some time that there was a link between gum and heart disease, but weren’t sure exactly what it was. They discovered that the bacteria found in gum disease and coronary build-up that leads to heart attacks was very similar but it was not clear how one influenced the other. Now, a genetic mutation found in those with both diseases may solve the mystery.
Study leader Dr. Arne Schaefer from the University of Kiel said they had isolated the gene linking the two conditions on chromosome nine. The variation is said to be identical for both diseases and it is known what protein the gene encodes but it is not yet clear how it is linked with the conditions.
However, what was made abundantly clear was the need for more preventative action as both heart and gum disease are worsened by smoking, diabetes and obesity. “Now we know for sure that there is a strong genetic link, patients with periodontitis [gum disease] should try to reduce their risk factors and take preventative measures at an early stage,” said Dr. Schaefer.
He advised that due to the proven link to coronary heart disease, gum disease should be taken very seriously by both patients and dentists and treated as soon as possible.
