The disappointing summer weather has not stopped us tucking into an ice cream, reveals new research
Mintel, a leading market researcher, reported that Europeans do not need the sun to shine to be able to eat an ice cream, as sales have risen rapidly in Europe over the last few months, even though we have seen one of the coldest summers over recent years.
The researchers found that the German’s are the biggest ice cream lovers within Europe, each spending an average £19 on the treat per year.
The UK came third in the survey, with each Brit spending up to £13 a year on ice cream.
Sales in the UK also reflect the increasing demand for the cool treat. In 2008, sales were reported at £743m, this then rose to £799m in 2009 and is expected to grow even more in 2010.
Ana Lourenco, Global Market Navigator analyst at Mintel, said, ‘While Germany appears to have the biggest ice cream lovers, the overall European increase in value despite recession highlights consumer demand.’
