Istanbul – Cultural capital of Europe
The famous view: Istanbul at night

In 2010 Istanbul was nominated as the cultural capital of Europe. This result was hardly surprising as it is one of the most exciting cities at the frontiers from the European to the Asian world.

Sitting on a terrace, with a tasty Turkish coffee and watching the sun descend into the sunset, the water under the Bosporus bridge dazzles in a golden shimmer and the silhouettes of the Hagia Sophia, the blue Mosque and the old palace of the sultan become blurred in the dawn, then you can say, you have seen the most stunning sight in Istanbul.

But, of course, that’s not the only highlight to see in the city that is populated by 15m people.

Istanbul is a very young city, with over 60 per cent of the inhabitants under the age of 30. So it is not surprising that the city is fast moving and has a great atmosphere for young people.

There is a wide range of cafés, restaurants and bars situated throughout the city, so no matter what type of cuisine your are looking for, you are bound to find it somewhere.

Tradition meets modernisation time and time again throughout this huge city. It is the mix of both modern and historic architecture in one place that tourists find most intriguing when they visit Istanbul.

Visiting at least one of the many museums in the city is also a must. The Istanbul Modern museum, which hosts exhibitions of renowned Turkish and foreign artists is popular with many tourists who visit the city. The Pera Museum which showcases world famous artists, such as Rembrandt, is also worth a visit.

It is also recommended that tourists visit the Turkish Baths so as to sample some of the local culture. It will be an experience that you will never forget.

A visit to the Grand Bazaar should also be on every tourists list. The largest and oldest market in the world, it sells a wide variety of clothes, ceramics, textiles and souvenirs. The market is the perfect place for tourists to pick up presents for loved ones at home.

Istiklal Avenue is the most popular destination for tourists during the evening. With an array of entertainment on offer, tourists are able to party the night away.
