Employers are expecting to cut over 5 per cent of staff
Recovery in the jobs market is stalling this year according to research, as demand for workers falls
The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) says a third of employers are preparing to cut jobs in the next three months according to a poll of 600 employers.
The public sector will be hit hardest with 36 per cent making redundancies. Across all sectors employers are expecting to lose 5.5 per cent of staff, up from the 3.6 per cent being considered three months ago. Gerwyn Davies, CIPD public policy adviser says, ‘While the number of employers planning to make redundancies is similar to that in the spring, this trend masks the true extent of forthcoming job losses in the third quarter of the year.’
The UK’s largest recruitment company, Hays, confirmed the bad news for job seekers. Chief executive Alastair Cox says, ‘At the moment most of the demand for jobs is simply organisations replacing employees who’ve left. It’s really about job churn at the moment.’
