Leafy green vegetables have been found to cut the risk of getting diabetes, a research study has found
Experts are encouraging people to increase their intake of vegetables such as cabbage and spinach in order to fight the risk of developing the illness.
The researchers, from the University of Leicester looked at the results of 220,000 people who ate the vegetables.
The results showed that eating more fruit and vegetables in general was not strongly linked with decreasing the risk, but when it came to green leafy vegetables the risk reduction was much larger.
The researchers found that, by eating a daily dose of 106g of leafy vegetables, the risk of getting diabetes reduces by 14 per cent.
Dr Iain Frame, director of research at Diabetes UK, said, ‘This is the first time that there has been a suggested link specifically between green leafy vegetables and the reduced risk of developing diabetes.’
Experts are still urging people to make sure that they continue to aim for five portions of fruit and vegetables a day.
