Having fellow colleagues on long term sick causes annoyance and low morale in the workplace
The study, carried out by Aviva UK Health, found that one in five colleagues who are left behind in the office feel annoyed and overworked when their workmates are absent from work for an extended period of time.
One in ten also admitted that they worry that the company will go out of business and they’ll lose their job if one of their colleagues goes off sick.
The study also found that the colleagues who phone in sick also worry about missing work, with a fifth of employees feeling guilty about letting their fellow colleagues down.
Another 58 per cent of employees also admitted that they would worry about the financial strain of their long-term sickness of family and friends.
Long-term sick leave seems to be a regular problem for companies, with 69 per cent of employers admitting that this was a cause for concern.
Steve Bridger, head of Aviva UK Health, said, ‘Our research shows that it is not unusual for an employee to be off sick for a prolonged period of time at some point during their working life. If this happens, both the emotional and financial strains on the absent employee and remaining team members can be huge.’
