As wintry weather spreads across the country, people have been reminded to look after their elderly neighbours
The Met Office issue a weather warnings that temperatures could drop to as low as -5C in some parts of the UK so people are being asked to keep an eye on their elderly neighbours who could be at risk during the colder weather.
Ann Milton, the Public Health Minister, said ‘We all have a role to play in remembering the needs of friends, relatives and neighbours who could be at risk, especially at this time of year.’
Although recent figures have shown that the number of elderly people who die as a result of the cold weather has fallen, Age UK, a charity that campaigns for the elderly, have said that the numbers are still unacceptable.
The charity have reported that the UK still has one of the highest winter mortality deaths rates in Europe.
Motorists were also warned to be aware of icy conditions on the roads.
Gavin Hill-Smith, spokesman for the AA, said ‘People should try and stick to the main routes where possible and, when they can, avoid the more rural roads where black ice can be particularly treacherous.’
