Nearly two fifths of Brits have admitted to purchasing counterfeit goods, revealed a new survey
The research, carried out by Crimestoppers, found that although many people have bought fake goods, 87 per cent revealed that they would think again about their purchase if they knew that it could help to fund organised crime, such as drug dealing.
The most common counterfeit item purchased was found to be DVDs, with 24 per cent of survey participants admitting to knowingly buying a fake DVD.
Fake clothing was also a popular purchase, with 22 per cent admitting that they have bought fake designer clothing.
Crimestoppers have recently launched a nationwide campaign to crack down on the sale and purchase of counterfeit goods.
Mike Barton, Deputy Chief Constable of Durham Constabulary, who heads the ACPO Crimestoppers Working Group, said, ‘It’s easy to be tempted by the lure of cheap goods but if something seems too good to be true then it usually is.’
A recent review indicated that criminal gain from counterfeiting in the UK was worth an overall £1.3 billion, with £900m of this accruing to organised crime.
