Michelle Obama has beaten heads of state and chief executives to be named the most powerful women by Forbes magazine
The list, that is created each year, gave the U.S First Lady the title as she has “given a new generation of girls and women around the world a role model.”
Other powerful women to come in the top ten included, chat show host, Oprah Winfrey and, U.S Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton.
Forbes magazine commented that this year’s list was based “less on traditional titles and roles and more on creative influence and entrepreneurship.”
Moira Forbes, ForbesWoman Vice-President and publisher, said, ‘These women have broken the gender barriers in areas of commerce, politics, sports and media and cultural zeitgeist, and thereby affecting the lives of millions, sometimes billions of people.’
Last year the American President’s wife was ranked at number 40 whilst Mrs Merkel topped the list.
