The uncertain economic climate could result in an increase in deaths related to unsafe gas and electrical installations as people attempt dangerous DIY
New research has shown over 4 in 10 people have admitted they are more likely to tinker with their electrics or a new gas appliance because of the current economic climate. The research, carried out for Gas Safe Register highlights people’s worrying misconception of danger, and their willingness to put their family in danger in order to save money.
Only 15% of people said they would always use a professional tradesman, and while 82% questioned considered it dangerous to fit a gas fire themselves, 1 in 10 were still prepared to do so.
Wrongly fitted, badly repaired or poorly maintained gas appliances are a major cause of carbon monoxide poisoning and can also lead to gas leaks and explosions. On average 40 people a year are killed or injured in gas explosions, while 25 people die from carbon monoxide poisoning.
Almost 1 in 3 had never had their gas fire serviced, and over 10% of households had never had their boiler serviced. Ann Robinson, Gas Safe Register’s Director of Public Awareness says “If anyone thinks DIY gas work can save them money, they should think again. For the sake of a few pounds, they risk endangering the life of anyone who lives in that property – a life that is priceless.”
