A low fat diet may help some lose weight more than others

A new gene test may predict whether someone is more likely to lose weight on a low fat or low carbohydrate diet
US researchers found that in a study of 101 overweight women those on diets best for their genetic makeup lost more weight.
The researchers from Stanford University analysed data from the women using a DNA from a swab of their cheek cells, and then put them on different diets for a year. The diets were either very low carbohydrate, low carbohydrate/high protein, and low or very low fat.
They found those on a diet which matched their genotype lost two to three times more weight over the year than those on the ‘wrong’ diet.
Some British experts have questioned the study, saying it’s too small to make any conclusions, Professor Christine Williams from the University of Reading, said, ‘This is a very intriguing study, though very small. It fits pretty well with some of our own studies which showed that certain genotypes are more responsive than others to certain types of fats’.
Experts say that more studies will now be carried out.
