Eight cups of tea a day are good for you
Tea can help fight heart disease and improve brain power

A new expert report has revealed drinking up to eight cups of tea a day gives ‘significant health benefits’

The study has shown that drinking tea can help fight heart disease, improve brain power and lead to longer lives, good news for those who can’t get through a day at the office without countless cups of tea.

The author of the report, nutrition expert Dr Carrie Ruxton, said her work ‘debunked’ the health myths surrounding caffeinated drinks like tea, coffee and cocoa. Dr Ruxton found the caffeine contained in drinks can lead to a reduced risk of heart attack and stroke, as well as making drinkers feel more alert and cheerful.

She said the optimum caffeine intake for an adult was 400mg a day, equivalent to eight cups of tea or four coffees.

This amount gives drinkers the best levels of the health-giving antioxidants and flavanoids. Dr Ruxton also said the drinks are healthy for children, but should be limited to 95mg a day, equivalent to two small cups of two tea or a cup of small, weak coffee.
