More people are logging on to diagnose their illnesses

The NHS website that encourages people to self-diagnose has saved the health service millions of pounds, a new study has suggested
Waiting for a doctor’s appointment can be such a hassle, especially when you just need some quick advice.
It is perhaps for this reason that more than 100 million people have turned to the NHS Choices website, a 10 per cent increase from 2009.
The site offers patients a quick reference guide to illnesses, symptoms and treatments that can save people from waiting to see a doctor.
The university’s study found that over a third of the people who visited the medical site then decided that there was no need to visit their GP.
The site enables people to quickly diagnose common illnesses that are often the reason for many people’s avoidable and unnecessary visits to the doctor’s surgery.
Simon Burns, Health Minister, said, ‘Every day we use the internet and technology to organise our lives, and increasingly when it comes to our health.’
