On your bike! Top five British cycle trails
The Tissington Trail is a beautiful cycle trail through the Peak District National Park

There’s no better way to explore the British countryside than on two wheels, so get out in the fresh air on one of our favourite family-friendly cycle trails

1. The Camel Trail, Cornwall
The Camel Trail is one of Britain’s most beautiful, unspoilt traffic-free trails. With 18 miles of coastal and countryside scenery running between Bodmin and Padstow it’s one of Cornwall’s top tourist attractions. Cyclists can follow the old railway track, explore the surrounding woodland and ride alongside the River Camel before arriving at the picturesque Padstow harbour. There are panoramic views along the way, and its flat and easy track makes it ideal for a family bike ride. The steam railway and wildlife will entertain the children, while parents can enjoy the wine tasting at the Camel Valley Vineyard, or you can all delight in the Cornish cream teas and pastries at the Camel Trail Tea Gardens.
Time: about 3 hours

2. The Rutland Water Cycle Way, Leicester
The 25-mile Rutland Water Cycle Way is 95 per cent off-road, and one of the most family-friendly cycle routes in the country. It’s a gentle, mostly flat ride with a few short slopes, making it doable for all ages. On the route around Rutland Water, which at 3,100 acres is the largest lowland man-made lake in Western Europe, cyclists can enjoy the fabulous waterside and Hambleton Peninsula views. The best route is the circuit around the Peninsula which also gives you scenic views of the reservoir shoreline. If you don’t want the hassle of taking your own bikes at Whitwell and Normanton, there’s a hire shop available.
Time: about 3½ hours

3. The Tissington Trail, Peak District
The Tissington Trail is one of the most popular in Britain, and takes you into the heart of the Peak District National Park. Following the old railway line from Ashbourne to Buxton, the 13-mile route winds through the gorgeous countryside of the National Park with it’s striking limestone scenery, up a steady climb before joining the High Peak Trail at Parsley Hay. It’s a moderate climb, and if you have the energy you can continue the ride southeast towards Cromford. But if you’re tired out, stop for refreshments at the Parsley Hay Cycle Centre before setting off on the easy downhill route back to Ashbourne.
Time: about 2½ hours

4. The East Neuk Route, St Andrews, Fife
The East Neuk route is a 37-mile circular trail around the lovely fishing villages and harbours in Fife. Weaving through the villages, you’ll pass strawberry fields, charming old village houses and end up in Anstruther, the largest of the East Neuk villages featuring a fishing museum, delicious fish and chip shops and bumpy cobbled streets. Take this route at a leisurely pace so you can enjoy the stunning scenery.
Time: about 4 hours

5. The Lon Eifion trail, Caernarfon, North Wales
One of the most popular cycle routes on the National Cycle Network, the 12.5 mile Lon Eifion trail has outstanding views, with Caernarfon Bay to the West and the beautiful mountains of Snowdonia to the East. The trail follows avenues of trees between the historical town of Caernarfon and the rural village of Bryncir, and there are plenty of sights along the trail to visit, including Glynllifon Country Park, Nantle Valley with its old quarries and one of the most beautiful mountains in the world, Snowdon.
Time: about 2 hours
