Some schools banned parents from taking photographs

Parents should be free to photograph their children in Nativity plays, the Information Commissioner has explained
As primary schools begin to close for the Christmas holidays, many will be putting on Nativity plays as part of the festive celebration.
However, there has been controversy over whether the audience should be allowed to take photographs of their children whilst they are on stage.
A number of schools have banned photography on their premises to protect pupils who are adopted or in foster care.
The Information Commissioner, Christopher Graham, has since said that such photos do not breach the Data Protection Act and has released guidance for schools after receiving numerous queries from parents.
Mr Graham said, ‘Having a child perform at a school play or a festive concert is a very proud moment for parents and carers and is understandable a memory that many want to capture on camera.’
He also added, ‘Armed with our guidance, parents should feel free to snap away this Christmas and stand ready to challenge any schools or councils that say ‘bah, humbug’ to a bit of festive fun.’
