Poor spelling is costing UK businesses millions of pound in lost revenue, claims an online entrepreneur
Spelling mistakes can be embarrassing for a company as even small mistakes can often make the site look unprofessional, which can turn customers away.
Charles Duncombe has revealed that a single spelling mistake can cut online sales by up to 50 per cent.
Poor spelling skills appear to be a wide problem. Mr Duncombe said, that the problem for online firms isn’t technology but finding staff that can spell.
He said, ‘Often these cutting-edge companies depend upon old-fashioned skills.’
James Fothergill, the CBI’s head of education and skills, said, ‘Our recent research shows that 42 per cent of employers are not satisfied with the basic reading and writing skills of school and college leavers and almost half have had to invest in remedial training to get their staff’s skills up-to-scratch.’
Mr Fothergrill added that the government must make the improvement of basic literacy and numeracy skills or all school and college leavers a top priority.
