Spruce up your mattress
We owe it to ourselves to ensure that we get the best night’s sleep possible

We spend over a third of our lives in bed, so we owe it to ourselves to ensure that we get the best night’s sleep possible

Even though the spring-cleaning month passed a while ago, sprucing up your mattress will greatly improve your night’s sleep.

With over 170 years experience, bed company Somnus have been dedicated to making mattresses. They have the following simple tips to help you clean and maintain your mattress:

Seasonal turning
It is important to turn your mattress to spread the wear and tear of daily use and ensure the natural fillings settle in the bed evenly.

Don’t vacuum
Contrary to popular belief, it is important not to vacuum your mattress as this can displace the filling pads within.

Give it a brush
Over time your mattress can develop a build up of dust and dirt – purchasing a good quality soft brush to remove this is highly recommended and will help you maintain a hygienic sleep.

Give it some air
Airing your mattress as regularly as possible is highly recommended. This is done by removing all bedding and ventilating the room well.

Accidental spills
If you happen to spill liquid or stain the mattress, soak up as much fluid as possible with a dry towel and sponge any stains away with a damp cloth, then leave the mattress to air.

Protect your bed
Lastly, we would strongly recommend using a good quality washable mattress protector. Never use a plastic sheet or bag for this as it will not allow your mattress to breath and could result in serious damage through condensation.
