USA Today have highlighted the key destinations many people will be travelling to in 2011
Curacao – 2011 marks Curacao’s first full year as an autonomous nation within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. To mark this momentous year the nation will be opening its doors to the world and making their country more accessible. The island’s warm waters, colourful architecture and unexplored territory by visitors will surely make it a firm choice among those seeking a relaxing break in luxurious surroundings.
New York – The Big Apple has several events and anniversaries scheduled next year, such as the 125th birthday of the Statue of Liberty, the 120th anniversary of Carnegie Hall, and the 100th year of the Public Library. The Museum of the Moving Image’s reopening as well as new attractions such as the Museum of African Art are also expected to attract large crowds. The city is also going to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of September 11 with the opening of the National September 11 Memorial at Ground Zero.
Turku, Finland – Being crowned Europe’s Capital of Culture has brought global attention to this medieval city. There are hundreds of performances, exhibitions and events slotted in for 2011. Among them is the Bridge of Sound concert series and short filmmaking opportunities for visitors.
New Zealand – Lonely Planet named Wellington as one of its Top 10 Cities for 2011, naming it the “Best Little Capital in the World” for its culinary treats and scenic location – not forgetting the friendly residents as well. In March the Auckland Arts Festival is going to host 200 events for the large crowds expected to turn up while in September and October sports enthusiasts will also gather for the Rugby World Cup.
Japan – 2011 in Japan is going to be filled with cultural festivities and with access into and around the country made easier by improved air and land travel, next year is going to be a great year for travelling to the country. Tokyo’s Haneda Airport has given travellers more central airlift to the city, while bullet train routes have been extended so destinations such as Aomori are now connected.
Tallinn, Estonia – Another European Capital of Culture for 2011, music, dance and art are scheduled every day next year as a celebration. There will be rooftop film screenings, plenty of festivals, urban games and guided “sonic landmark” walks are just some of the events occurring throughout the year. 2011 is also going to mark the 20th anniversary of Estonia’s independence so the festivities are going to be enhanced with this in mind.
