Wearing clothing made from real animal fur often causes huge controversy, and now a survey has found that 95 per cent of the public would rather go fake
Animal rights campaigners have been battling fashion designers who use real animal fur in their garments so this result will come as positive news.
Wayne Hemingway, a fashion designer, said, ‘I’m repulsed by the idea of wearing fur and I can’t understand why anyone would want to drape themselves in it in the name of fashion.’
The RSPCA’s poll also found that 93 per cent of the public agree that clothing should be labelled as to whether it is real fur.
At London’s Fashion Week, earlier this year, catwalk model, Twiggy, said, ‘I am very sad that some designers are still using real fur when fake alternatives are so effective.’
Although some big fashion designers, such as Karl Lagerfeld and Giorgio Armani, have switched to faux fur, the message does not seem to be getting through to all of the fashion designers as real fur dominated the 2010 autumn/winter catwalks, with a shocking 400 designers still choosing to use real fur.
The RSPCA expressed its disappointment, as despite the growing awareness of the ethical issues surrounding fur and its production, some fashion designers are refusing to budge.
