Non-Surgical Skin Treatments that Dominated 2018

This year, there has been no need to go under the knife. From radiance to weight loss, these trending non-surgical skin treatments have delivered rejuvenating results.

Cryotherapy

Athletes and celebrities alike swear by cryotherapy. The most popular form of the latest wellness trend, whole-body cryotherapy (WBC), involves standing in a freezing tank for around four minutes. At minus 90C, the electrically created sub-zero temperature has been referred to as ‘exhilarating’, and a host of health benefits contribute to the appeal.

Pain relief and muscle healing make this treatment popular for sports conditioning, while mental clarity and reduced inflammation and migraines have made cryotherapy popular for managing insomnia, psoriasis and eczema. During treatment, blood vessels constrict which, when the temperature returns to normal, causes the blood to rush to the surface of the skin, stimulating collagen synthesis and a healthy, cellular glow.

Cryotherapy is even used as a weight loss tool. The extreme cold essentially tricks the body into thinking it’s dying, causing it to burn energy and calories to survive.

Rejuran Healer DNA treatment

In recent months, this Asian skin healing treatment has surged in popularity. Rejuran Healer is a filler treatment that is made of polynucleotides (PN), also known as DNA. More specifically, the treatment uses PN in salmon DNA—an effective ingredient for repairing the skin from the inside and reducing wrinkles, enlarged pores, scarring and fine lines.

The treatment lasts around 10 to 15 minutes and involves the use of a fine needle to inject micro amounts of Rejuran Healer under the skin in the superficial dermis. The two main effects that this has are wound healing and anti-inflammatory results. In a nutshell, this increases the skin’s metabolic rate as well as its elasticity, hydration, tone and texture, and also regulates oil production.

Cellfina

Cellulite affects around 90 percent of women and 10 percent of men, and is notoriously difficult to prevent and treat. With everyone looking to Kim Kardashian for inspiration, new minimally invasive booty treatments like Cellfina—a procedure that reduces the appearance of dimple-like cellulite by 90 percent—are becoming popular.

Cellfina uses a microblade technique to target the connective bands under the skin and treat the structural cause of cellulite on the thighs and buttocks. A session takes around 45 minutes and lasts for up to three years.

Mesotherapy

Popular in Europe, Mesotherapy involves tiny injections of substances like vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants, hormones, herbal extracts and amino acids. Also known as ‘skin prick rejuvenation’, this cocktail is injected into the mesoderm to promote the production of collagen and elastin, stimulating the skin’s metabolism and cellular turnover.

A Mesotherapy session lasts around 30 minutes and makes the skin look brighter and feel firmer, as well as fades wrinkles and fine lines. Other benefits include: removing fat in areas like the stomach, buttocks, thighs, arms, hips, legs, and face; reducing cellulite; recontouring the body; lightening pigmented skin; and treating alopecia.

CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting is a non-surgical fat reduction treatment that uses cooling technology to target and destroy fat cells. This treatment isn’t new but has gained traction as the non-invasive substitute for liposuction, becoming the go-to for stubborn fat cells. It quickly targets problem areas such as the abdomen, double chin, arms and thighs for a more toned appearance.

CoolSculpting takes about 45 minutes to complete and causes the body to gradually and naturally process and eliminate dead fat cells in the weeks after treatment. A handheld paddle suctions the skin, a cooling mechanism freezes it, and a firm massage of the area breaks up the fat to be eliminated.

Oxygen facials

Madonna-loved oxygen facials may seem like the latest questionable holistic trend, but by spraying a high-pressure stream of oxygen that delivers active ingredients to the skin, the treatment improves circulation and regeneration. The result is plumper, tighter, brighter and younger-looking skin, with regular treatments even improving acne and rosacea.

Oxygen is naturally antibacterial and has a cooling, calming effect. When administered to the skin under pressure, it enhances the absorption of the nourishing serums that are also applied during the treatment. The process takes about 30 to 60 minutes and ends with another layer of a topical serum.
