Gastric Balloon: A Non-Surgical Treatment for Weight Loss

The number of obesity cases has been slowly increasing in the past decade according to the Health Survey for England (HSE), increasing the risk of life threatening diseases. We spoke to the experts at Nugenesis about how the gastric balloon can be a non-surgical treatment for weight loss to tackle obesity. Weight loss can be a challenging task for some people, depending on their health conditions, lifestyles and the amount of weight they have to lose.

A healthy diet and exercise can be a safe way to lose a vast amount of weight. However, if that does not help, with certain conditions such as diabetes, people may consider gastric bypass surgery as an alternative.

Undertaking surgery can be a daunting decision to make, especially when considering the recovery time and procedure. An alternative non-surgical treatment for weight loss could be using the gastric balloon. A gastric balloon is a temporary balloon placed in your stomach to help aid weight loss. The experts at Nugenesis explain about the intricacies of this non-surgical treatment for weight loss and what to expect in terms of results.

The Procedure

The balloon is swallowed as a capsule during a 15 minute consultation in a physician’s office. Then, after a quick x-ray to make sure that the balloon is in your stomach, it is filled to 550ml through a tube attached to it, which is then removed.

How It Works

The gastric balloon works by exerting gentle pressure on the walls of your stomach to make you feel full and slow the passage of food. ‘It is an aid to weight loss and cannot replace a healthy, balanced diet. Use the feelings of fullness to practice eating smaller, healthier, meals aided by a coaching team that helps you to focus on diet and exercise, ‘ they explain. With less room in your stomach for food, the balloon acts as a constant reminder not to over eat. This can kick-start your weight loss and even transform your lifestyle eating habits. ‘After four months, the balloon empties itself and passes naturally, with no need to visit your doctor. Support from your weight loss team will continue, to help you maintain the changes made in your dietary and exercise behaviour.’
