We’re on the Move!

Everyone hates the business of moving because of the upheaval. Follow our tips on how to pick the right home removal company for a hassle-free experience and peace of mind.

As the time draws ever closer to the day of the big move, it’s a well-known fact that the house and home move is one of the most stressful of life’s stressful situations. But there are several ways you can reduce the stress, especially by carefully planning your move. Then, when it happens, you may even be able to sit back and enjoy it! Here are some great tips…

Find the best removal firm:

Ask around for recommendations, whether from family and friends or online reviews by other movers in your area. If you’re moving for the first time and unsure where to start, get quotes from websites like Reallymoving.com and Moveme.com.

Narrow down your choices:

Make a selection of your top three home removal companies based on how well they know your area, how reputable they are, and whether they provide the exact services you need for your move. Keep in mind that the better the removal firm knows your area, the smoother and faster (thus cheaper) your move will be.

Ask each company to survey your home:

This step is essential, as it will help you get a better idea of each company and inform them of any requirements you might have. It will also allow them to explain the moving process and answer any of your questions before you commit.

Double check your quotes:

Compare your quotes, double-checking that each is inclusive of the same specifications and special requests—whether you have limited parking space, special handling needs for breakables or furniture that is particularly difficult to move (a piano, for example).

Put it in writing:

When you’ve picked a company, settle the quotation in writing rather than over the phone. Quotations should include pricing for packing, storage where necessary, loading and unloading, and any special requirements.

Get your packing organised before the removals team arrives:

Disassemble large furniture, wrap your fragile possessions with tissue paper or bubble wrap, remove carpets, curtains and light fittings which you plan on keeping, and make sure your boxes are all labelled and not too heavy for one person to carry. If you can afford to, have the removal company pack your things to save you the frustrations and hassle. Finally, remember to let the team know where you would like your furniture to be placed inside your new home.

According to the British Association of Removers, the key to a successful move is to plan in advance, so organise your paperwork well before the move date. Check you’re insured against any damage that may be caused during the move, and give your driver clear directions and a spare key to your new home. 

If you don’t want your possessions covered in dust or damaged, you can get space from as small as 10 sq ft or as big as you need at Big Yellow self storage. You can store for as little as seven days and, with pin code access, get to your stuff anytime. CCTV and individually alarmed rooms keep everything safe.
