Care for your hair

The right nourishment can help you to maintain a healthy head of hair as you grow older. Read our guide on how to care for your hair.

For some people, hairstyle is an important element of their personal identity. Once hair starts to thin and a few grey strands appear, it can have a negative effect on self-confidence. However, there is no need to despair over your hair care, as today’s products offer more choice than ever for treatments to maintain your hair in the best possible condition.

Don’t let hair loss get you down

Whatever your age, it is normal to lose at least a hundred or so hairs per day. However, as we grow older hair follicles shrink and hair begins to thin as some follicles can only produce hairs that are invisible to the naked eye. This thinning is the primary cause of pattern baldness, medically known as androgenic alopecia, in both men and women. While this doesn’t pose a risk to health, hair loss can be a source of distress to many. Treatment for male pattern baldness includes medications such as Finasteride and Minoxidil.

Another form of hair loss, alopecia areata, is caused by problems with the immune system that occurs when hair follicles are attacked by immune cells. The condition is prevalent in teenagers and young adults. Recent research conducted by Columbia University Medical Centre has found that ruxolitinib, a drug used to treat patients with a rare form of bone marrow cancer, eliminates these immune cells. At present, only two clinical trials have been carried out, however, the discovery heralds good news for patients that suffer mental and emotional stress as a result of the condition.

If you are seeking treatment for hair loss, always make an appointment to see your GP before booking a private consultation with a dermatologist.

Top tips to nourish fine hair include treating your hair with protein rich treatments two or three times a week. Products enriched with keratin, the protein found in your hair, tend to be the most effective. Minimise your use of heated styling tools like hair dryers and curling tongs, and avoid layering harsh chemical-laden styling products onto your hair.

Go grey gracefully

By the time you hit your 30s, it is likely you will have noticed a few grey hairs emerging from your scalp. By the age of 50, half of us may have a full head of grey hair. As we age, our bodies produce less of the melanin that gives hair its usual tint and shine. Without melanin to protect it, the protein in hair absorbs harmful UV rays from the sun, which ultimately make it weaker. Do your hair a favour by protecting it from UV rays with a sun hat, and using a shine-enhancing shampoo as a restorative.

Sleek and shiny

As the years pass, the body’s production of sebum (oil) decreases by half. As a result, hair loses its ability to retain moisture. While maintaining a sleek, glossy finish may require a little more effort, it is still possible if you apply deep-conditioning treatments at least once a week. In addition, avoid washing your hair more than once every other day and get frequent trims to banish split ends. Dehydrated hair also loses its elasticity, making it more prone to breakages. Hydration is the key to combating brittle hair, so use a leave-in hydrator or apply oil to re-moisturise.
