Why the Right Mattress is Essential for Healthy Sleep

Many of us sleep poorly, but could the right choice of mattress help? We asked the experts from Mattressman

What is the importance of good sleep to health?
Sleep is essential for our health. Like eating and drinking, we need sleep to maintain our health both physically and mentally but is often the most neglected component of looking after ourselves. Achieving 7-9 hours of sleep a night restores exertion, improves our concentration, cognition and immune function, whilst also preventing heart disease, excess weight gain and fatigue.

What are the main challenges to getting a good night’s sleep?
Whilst everyone may have different reasons why they struggle to sleep, there are certainly some common obstacles that prevent it. The stresses of our daily lives are one of the main reasons we struggle to get a solid night’s sleep. To combat this, keep your sleep schedule to regular times, create a restful environment and steer clear of electronics before bedtime.

How important is a good mattress to our sleep quality?
Choosing the mattress right for you is crucial for your sleep quality, as filling types, mattress firmness and composition can all affect how well you sleep. If you’re affected by hayfever and choose a mattress with natural as opposed to hypoallergenic fillings, it can exacerbate your symptoms. Similarly, as discussed below, the wrong mattress firmness for your preferred sleeping position means your spine rests in a misaligned position, causing back problems. Lastly, a memory foam mattress would be a bad choice for a hot sleeper because it retains heat so well.

What is the best sleeping position?
Sleeping on your side, back or stomach are the most common positions when hitting the hay. Sleeping on your side and back is ideal with the right mattress support tension for these positions, however, the same cannot be said for stomach sleeping. Even with the right firmer support tension, sleeping on your stomach can cause the spine to be misaligned and place strain on the lower back. To avoid waking up with back pain, you should try and avoid sleeping on your front.

What are the different types of mattress support?
At Mattressman, we stock five different types of mattress support: softer, medium, medium firm, firmer and extra firm. Each support tension is designed for a particular preferred sleeping position to ensure your spine is aligned in a healthy position. Softer and medium mattresses provide cushioning to the shoulders and hips for side sleepers, whilst a firmer support supplies a rigid surface for back and stomach sleepers. If you don’t have a preferred sleeping position, a medium firm support will adequately support you in all positions, whereas an extra firm mattress is best designed for anyone who is affected by back or joint pain and require extra support.

What can I do if my partner and I have different sleep preferences?
You want your mattress to support you in your go-to sleeping position, but if one prefers to sleep on their side whilst the other is more partial to back sleeping, your recommended mattress tension will differ. Side sleepers are best suited to softer mattresses whilst back and stomach sleepers need something a bit firmer. The best way around this is to opt for a medium firm mattress, a support tension that can support you both adequately in your sleeping positions.

What can I do to regulate my temperature when sleeping?
Steering clear of materials that have strong heat retention properties, such as memory foam, is the first step to ensuring your temperature is regulated. If you frequently feel hot throughout the night, you may wish to opt for a mattress with cooling or temperature regulating qualities such as Geltex or latex. These materials are breathable and are designed to wick away excess moisture and heat whilst you sleep. Natural fillings such as cotton have similar properties to this as well.

Can I get a mattress delivered rolled up?
Yes! Many mattress brands have now incorporated options that are compressed, rolled up, vacuum-packed and delivered in a box. It makes for a much easier delivery process, not to mention manoeuvring it to the bedroom of your choice when it lands on your doorstep. We feature a range of fantastic rolled-up mattresses available in a variety of sizes, support tensions and filling types. Be sure to take care when removing from the packaging, and they return to their original shape in several hours.
