What is CBD, what can it do for you and how is it used? The experts from Satipharm explain
CBD is short for cannabidiol, one of at least 113 different cannabinoids that can be found in the hemp plant (Cannabis Sativa). It’s totally safe to use, and many CBD products have recently been approved by the UK Food Standards Agency for sale in the UK.
CBD has been consumed by humans for thousands of years through various forms, such as smoking hemp or through food and drink such as Hemp bread, Hemp beer and other foods.
CBD was discovered as a separate natural compound in the 1940’s and is now known to interact with the Endocannabinoid system that all humans have throughout our bodies. CBD complements and boosts the actions of our own internal cannabinoids to exert its health and wellness benefits. CBD is non-intoxicating (does not cause a ‘high’) so does not impair your daily routine. Interest in CBD for its health benefits continues to build and we are seeing an explosion in clinical trials investigating CBD in sleep, pain and other medical indications, plus a number of advanced CBD formulations are now available.
Advances in CBD
Like other advances in science and technology, health products also undergo significant improvements over time. Black and white TVs are long gone, as are the bulky original colour TVs, and we now watch programmes on flat screens, in super high definition! Similarly, CBD is also undergoing transformations in formats. We no longer have to smoke plants, or place drops of an oil under our tongue to get CBD into our bodies – we can now take CBD in advanced capsules.
Oils, sprays or capsules?
Different formats suit different purposes and there is a good reason why pharmacies are full of tablets and capsules. Taking a capsule is simple, tasteless and gives a precise dose of medicine or supplement every time, which is why they are the preferred way to take these products. CBD is no different. It’s generally accepted that smoking is damaging to health and vapes have also had some safety issues, plus both inhalational formats have difficulty in measuring the dose taken. Oil and spray formats are normally confined to throat medicines, or for infants and adults who have difficulties swallowing.
Taking CBD in an oil format has another problem. Most CBD oil taken is metabolised by the liver before it can have a beneficial effect on the body. Scientific studies have shown this loss to be up to 94% of the CBD. This means for every 100mg of CBD oil you purchase, up to 94mg CBD will be lost. This is why CBD companies are looking for advanced formulations to reduce the loss of CBD and increase the value for money for the consumer.
Satipharm advanced CBD capsules have been shown in clinical trials to be up to 3.5 times more effective than CBD oil.
Which Capsules to Buy?
Not all CBD capsules are the same. Many of the CBD capsules available are filled with ground CBD powder (and other fillers like chalk) or even just CBD oil placed inside capsules (similar to traditional cod liver oil capsules). There is no evidence to show these capsules work any better than bottled CBD oil, and most of the CBD will likely be metabolised or excreted without having an effect.
However, there are advanced CBD capsules available in the UK which are backed by clinical trials which provide the confidence you need when buying CBD products. These products use advanced technology to embed the CBD in tiny microbeads within the capsules which are proven to increase the amount of CBD reaching the body to have an effect.
Co-formulations
Some CBD products are made with added vitamins and plant extracts to focus on particular needs of the consumer. Some of these have been specifically designed for women suffering symptoms of perimenopause or menopause, or for people having issues with sleep, stress and anxiety, or who wish to keep their bodies in good condition. They are made this way because vitamins such as A, B, D, E and K are proven to support the body with tiredness & fatigue, hormonal activity, the immune system, and mental performance.
Things to think about when buying CBD
• Buy your products from a reputable source such as a High Street pharmacy chain, independent pharmacy, or leading health store. These retailers have done all the hard work for you and have strict guidelines regarding the health and safety profile of CBD products.
• Always look for CBD products which are marked GMP. This means that they comply with internationally recognised Good Manufacturing Practice standards.
• Research your product. Leading CBD companies will provide details of any clinical trials they’ve conducted on their websites.
