Neurofeedback therapy can be applied to a wide range of mental health conditions – but how does it work and what can it do for you? The experts from Brainworks explain
What conditions can neurofeedback therapy address?
Neurofeedback therapy can be beneficial to anyone seeking to improve their mental health and cognitive abilities. Specific conditions include anxiety, depression. PTSD, memory issues, ADHD and autism. If we can see imbalances in brainwave activity, even if no condition has been diagnosed, we can help.
How does it work?
Neurofeedback therapy works by harnessing neuroplasticity – the brain’s ability to adapt and change. We use 19-channel sensor caps that can read both surface and deeper brain activities. As clients watch a film or TV show, their brain receives real-time feedback: the screen’s brightness and volume reflect the brain’s performance. When the brain moves in a positive direction, the screen becomes brighter and the volume increases. This feedback mechanism re-trains the brain, creating new pathways and resulting in healthier ways of thinking, feeling, responding and behaving.
How does neuorofeedback thereapy combine Eastern tradition and Western medicine?
The Buddha is quoted as saying ”We are what we think, all that are arises with our thoughts, with our thoughts we make the world”.
Neurofeedback is all about learning how to shift your mind out of it’s habitual states and into a new perspective.
For meditators, that means using the feedback as a “mental compass”, training your mind towards a meditative state. With repeated practice reaching the desired state, you can then reach it more easily in your daily practice without the help of neurofeedback
What is LoRETA imaging? What is QEEG?
A QEEG is a map of your brain activity. We use it to spot areas of over or under-activity, to see how different areas of the brain are connecting, and the speed of those connections. LoRETA imaging takes this a step further, giving us an image of the deeper brain structures, and allowing us to map and train these deeper structures directly rather than bit-by-bit on the surface.
We use 19-channel sensor caps to read the brain wave activity in both assessments and during training sessions so we can work at a deeper level where need be.
What different courses are available?
Protocols are created based on your individual brain maps. No protocols are ever the same as no one’s brains are ever the same. We do not use any ”off the shelf protocols”
The protocols are designed to assist your brain improve function based on your goals. We update the protocols every 5 sessions as your brain comes into greater balance and your goals are met.
How long do the courses take?
Our standard course is 12 sessions, each lasting up to an hour. This duration is carefully chosen to allow the brain sufficient time to undergo noticeable and sustainable changes. The entire course is spread over three weeks, ensuring a consistent and focused approach to therapy. For more deep-seated issues, we offer an extended program of over 20 sessions, which takes place across five weeks. This longer duration provides additional time for the brain to adapt and integrate new patterns of thought and behaviour, ensuring a more profound and lasting impact on the client’s mental health and cognitive abilities.
What do they cost?
The initial assessment is £285. This includes a brain map.
12 sessions are £1650 and 20 sessions are £2650.
We re-map every 5 sessions, which is included in the pack price.
What’s the story behind Brainworks?
In 2007 James and Sarah Roy experienced neurofeedback themselves in Canada. The results were so powerful they decided to re-train and establish Brainworks in the UK. They had clinics in Bristol, Brighton and London. In 2011 they started to look for ways to get Neurofeedback to more people with at home systems. In 2014 they started to develop their own software to be able to deliver clinic standard services in peoples home. From 2015 they were able to deliver just that and have evolved a system that offers excellent results to even the least tech savvy clients.
