All sorts of fillings are available for duvets, but there’s one natural material you might not have thought about – wool. The experts from Southdown Duvets explain its advantages.
- What are the advantages of wool over other duvet materials?
Wool ticks the boxes. It is sustainable, naturally flame retardant, fully recyclable, hypo-allergenic, does not shed plastic micro-fibres and, best of all, it reduces the effects of night sweats as it adjusts to the micro-climate around the sleeper.
- How are wool duvets particularly beneficial during menopause?
While wool duvets will not stop the incidence of menopausal night sweats, they will reduce the symptoms, rewarding you with a greatly improved night’s sleep.
This is how it works: Wool “wicks” moisture away from your body from where it just evaporates through the duvet. Feathers and down cannot wick like this, resulting in your sweat getting trapped between you and the duvet. Hence the nasty, hot clammy feeling. Synthetic duvets are even worse. Our customers say that sleeping under a Southdown duvet for the first time is, literally, an overnight revelation in comfort.
- I have heard that wool duvets smell sheepy. Is this true?
A wool duvet should never smell like a barn yard. If there is any trace of a rural smell, it means that the wool has not been precision washed and this is unacceptable. Ask for a swatch sample of the wool filling before you buy and satisfy yourself that it passes the smell test. If a brand is not prepared to send you a swatch, turn your nose up.
- There are a number of wool duvets on the market, what can I do to ensure I buy the best?
Read the reviews on public forums like Trustpilot and Google. Pay attention to the bad reviews which will give you a very good idea of what sort of post-sale customer service you can expect from the supplier.
Call the supplier before you buy. See how knowledgeable they are about their products, but more importantly, see if they are interested in listening to you and advising about your particular bedding needs. Also ask them about their return and end-of-life recycling policies, if their packaging is eco-friendly and do they support British farmers by paying a premium price for the wool?
- Where does Southdown Duvets’s wool come from and what is special about it?
As the name suggests, Southdown wool comes from the famous Southdown sheep, one of the oldest and most beloved breed of British sheep. The short length of the wool fibre, while rubbish for knitting yarn, is absolutely perfect for the lightest, fluffiest wool duvet.
But there are only about 3,000 Southdown sheep in the UK. The upshot is that we can only make a limited number of these duvets annually. Once they are sold, it’s another year before the sheep regrow their fleece, allowing us to make more duvets. We therefore strongly advise customers to pre-order to avoid disappointment.
- What sizes of Southdown duvets are available?
Southdown Duvets offer the widest choice of sizes and tog weights on the market. From Single all the way to Emperor and no less than 5 different weights across the full tog scale from 1-13. This means Southdown Duvets can match you to the right duvet rather than offering the standard off-the-shelf weights which may not suit you.
- What’s the story behind Southdown Duvets and what makes their duvets unique?
Southdown Duvets was founded 14 years ago and is run by a lady sheep farmer who understands all about the menopause and waking up repeatedly at night feeling like a hot molten mess. Over the years, we have helped thousands of women reduce the effects of night sweats and benefit from improved, restorative sleep.
