All About Garden Fences

From top tips for maintaining your Fence Panels to advice on installing your own Pergola, the team at Grange Fencing answers your questions.

1. On average how much would it cost for labour and materials to put Grange Fencing in my garden?

That would depend on the size of the work involved and the area of the country the garden is located. Grange fencing only supply products to trade and do not install these themselves. Our advice would be to contact local landscapers for accurate quotes.

2. Am I legally required to face the smooth side of my fence to my neighbour, when he says I am?

We’ve never heard of this before. If you wish to change your fence it would be up to you which way round it goes. It is possible to buy panels which look the same on both sides. Talking to your neighbour first is always advisable to iron over any potential issues.

3. What are maximum heights allowed for fences between properties? What are the best fencing options?

Most gardens will have a 5ft fence and a 1ft gravel board, so a maximum height of 6ft. Others may have a smaller gravel board (6in) and a 6ft panel. However, you should always check with your local council for restrictions. Sometimes living in an area of outstanding natural beauty or a national park may have restrictions.

4. What’s the best way to maintain my Grange Installation throughout the year?

Once installed, your fence should not need any further care for 12 months. At this stage, we would recommend maintaining it with a water-based preservative every year or two, in order to increase the longevity of the product.

5. Can custom-size fence panels be made?

Unfortunately Grange is unable to supply bespoke fence panels. For custom-size panels, speak to a local sawmill.

6. What is the best paint to use on my Grange Installation?

All Grange products are pre-treated and therefore will not need any additional treatment for 12 months. If you do wish to retreat the timber, be mindful of the time of year; warm weather may add moisture to one side of a panel, increasing the risk of movement (warping). It is therefore advisable to leave them to ‘settle’ in for a few weeks before attempting to re-treat.

7. Is the Pergola or any other structure range at Grange available to install by yourself of professionally?

Ultimately, it is up to the individual to decide how confident they feel about erecting any structure. Whilst some of the structures are simple to erect, others are slightly more tricky and require more than one person to install. As with all Grange structures, the Pergola comes with easy to follow instructions. There is also a host of helpful ‘How To’ guides that can be accessed via the Grange website.

8. What would be your top planting tip for the Grange Planters?

It is always advisable to use a liner in any planter. This will increase the longevity of the planter itself as well as preventing against over-watering.

9. I need to replace two concrete fence posts. Should I use Carlton Concrete FP-ECOFIX? If so, how many bags per post?

It is normally recommended to use one bag per post depending on the depth. If you are replacing an existing post and having to take out old concrete, you may increase the size of the hole, so adding more than one bag may be required.

10. Are Grange products made from sustainable materials?

Yes, all of our timber products are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
