If you have a pest problem, whether it’s rodents or insects, at any time of the year, it’s important to get it under control quickly. The experts from Lodi explain their approach
What are the most common types of pests in UK home and gardens?
Pests found in and around your home and garden can range from your flying & crawling insects (wasps, flies, ants, fleas and spiders) to the furrier four-legged, tailed kind (rats and mice). Have you ever heard the saying – you’re never more than 6ft away from a rat? It’s estimated that there are 29.9 million dwellings in the UK, so we don’t need to tell you that the chance of a rodent being nearby is pretty high.
Are they seasonal?
Rats and mice are around all year but tend to be more of a nuisance in the colder weather. Between October and February temperatures plummet and rodents will seek warmth, shelter and food sources within homes and outbuildings up and down the country. Their rapid reproduction can quickly turn a single rat or mouse into a full-blown infestation, making it difficult to manage.
Pest infestations in general are very dependent on several factors; lifecycle (breeding, mating, foraging, hibernation), change of season & climate, to name but a few. We recommended you maintain a clutter free environment and continuously monitor to spot signs of pest activity, including droppings, pathways, unexplained noises and movement.
How can I keep pests out of my home and garden?
Keeping pests out of your home and garden always starts with prevention, in the case of rodents, proofing entry points with sealants (Racan Premium Anti Rodent Sealant), blocking with mesh & vents, and spraying Anti-Rodent Spray around electrical cabling and insulation materials.
If you already have a rodent problem you need to act fast, our Racan Grab Bags are the perfect choice for small infestations. Three of a kind bait formulations for fast, effective home defence against rats & mice.
Lodi UK also offers an extensive range of chemical free rodent control, animal traps, stations & cages and deterrents including the Racan Sonic Pest Repeller.
What are the signs of pest infestation?
Key signs of a rodent infestation can be things such as teeth, chew & nibble marks around food sources and entry points. Rodents need water to survive, mice get their water intake from food however rats need to drink between 15ml – 60ml of water a day. Look out for tiny footprints or tail swoosh marks near water sources. Droppings also provide evidence of rodents but be aware droppings differ in shape and size between species. Along with droppings, mice need to urinate, leaving a strong and distinct ammonia smell. You might also notice urine pillars appearing; these are small mounds of urine and dirt that pile up where mice are active.
Mice are inquisitive creatures, whereas Rats are naturally neophobic and avoid new things until they are sure they are not a threat. They are also aware of their surroundings and use their survival instincts to avoid anything new. Stay alert to identify signs of reoccurring activity and listen out for unexpected noises (scratching and scurrying) particularly at night.

How quickly are they effective?
Effectiveness depends on the situation and infestation type, it’s important to remember that every single one is unique! We’ve written an https://www.lodi-uk.com/consumer-media-centre/how-to-guides/the-ultimate-guide-to-rodent-control“Ultimate Guide to Rodent Control” Blog but in the meantime here’s some hints and tips to keep you in control…
- Know Your Rodent
Understanding the type of rodent you’re dealing with is key. Rats and mice behave differently, so the bait and the method you choose should be species-specific.
- Bait Box Placement
Location, location, location! Rodents prefer moving along walls and hidden areas. Place bait boxes in strategic locations where rodents are most likely to pass through, but away from places where pets and children can accidentally interact with it. Check bait stations regularly to make sure bait is being consumed and hasn’t been damaged or spilt
- Be Aware of Your Surroundings
Rodent activity often increases with changes in weather or construction nearby. Be mindful of what’s happening around your property. Nearby disruptions might drive more rodents to seek shelter, making it essential to adjust your baiting strategy accordingly.
- Pick Your Poison
Different baits work in different ways, so choosing the right one is crucial. Some baits act quickly, while others may take a few days to show results. The type of bait can alter the effectiveness as rodents often have a preference in formulations (block, paste, grain).
Are there humane alternatives to rodenticides?
If you are reluctant to use rodenticides and prefer a more humane approach to rodent control there are other methods available. 🐀RACAN chemical-free Rodent Control: Animal Traps & Cages, Electronic Repellers & Deterrents including our Racan Sonic Repeller, exclusively designed to keep them away by emitting ultrasonic or electromagnetic waves to make pests uncomfortable enough to want to move house.
