A Guide to Gorgeous & Natural Hair

With a vast abundance of hair products to choose from and so much conflicting advice, it can be difficult to find the perfect solution to keep your hair looking and feeling its best. While we all have different hair types that require different routines, using natural products, minimising heat damage, and knowing how to repair your hair when it’s feeling a bit lacklustre is key to maintaining gorgeous & natural hair.

It’s what’s on the inside that counts

One of the most important things to remember is that, like your skin, your hair is a reflection of your overall health –– to keep your hair looking lovely, it’s essential to maintain a healthy diet.

Staying hydrated should be at the top of your list if it isn’t already. If you’re currently not getting as much water as you should be, ensuring you’re drinking enough water will improve your hair’s health almost instantly.

A well-balanced diet will boost your hair’s shine and strength and allow it to repair itself more easily in the event of damage. These vitamins and nutrients are the most important when it comes to maintaining gorgeous & natural hair:

  • Protein
  • Iron
  • Zinc
  • Omega 3
  • Zinc
  • Biotin
  • Vitamins A, C and E.

Many of these can be found in nuts, legumes and leafy greens, which are easily added to your diet and will keep your hair and skin feeling amazing.

Wash your hair properly

Is there really a right way to wash your hair? You’d be surprised how many people aren’t doing it quite right.

First of all, using the right products for your hair will make a world of difference. Secondly, high-quality products with natural ingredients are transformative when it comes to boosting your hair’s feel and appearance.

Most people opt for very hot water and lots of shampoo when washing their hair. Too much product and overly hot water will dry out your hair, making it tangled and harder to manage. If your hair is shoulder length or shorter, a dollop the size of a 20p should be enough to cleanse your locks, whereas, for longer hair, a 50p-sized amount will suffice.

Your ends won’t need shampooing directly; you should instead apply the product to your roots and massage the scalp. This will encourage increased circulation around your follicles, encouraging hair growth, and the run-off will be enough to freshen up your ends. When it comes to conditioner, work in reverse, applying it to your ends. Before you apply conditioner, remove excess water from your hair first, then work a small amount of conditioner into your hair below the nape of your neck – applying conditioner to your roots will make your hair greasy.

Finding the perfect products

For many of us, having great hair is key to feeling good about our appearance, which means it’s worth finding products that work for you.

Look for products that are made with natural ingredients, such as essential oils that are known to keep hair lustrous. Look for shampoos and conditioners that contain organic coconut oil as it’s well known for its nourishing and moisturising properties.

Parabens and SLSs have received plenty of bad press in recent years, so it’s best to look for hair care that doesn’t contain these ingredients and take care of your hair in as natural a way as possible.

You should also consider the environmental impact your cosmetic choices may be having. Many brands are becoming increasingly proactive to minimise their effect on the environment. Sourcing vegan, cruelty-free products ensures clean hair as well as a clean conscience.

Minimise damage and know how to repair it

It’s near-impossible to avoid damaging your hair totally. Air pollution, sun, chlorine, colour and heat can all cause your hair to suffer, but it’s not impossible to minimise and even undo the damage.

Leaving your hair to dry naturally for a while before blow-drying will allow you to use a lower temperature, and reduce the time you spend styling by reducing frizz and excess damage. Heat-protection sprays will maintain strong hair and reduce dryness when using heat styling, while intensive conditioners will allow your hair to repair itself more quickly, banishing split ends and increasing strength and shine.

Improving your hair’s health won’t happen overnight, but working these changes into your hair care routine will work wonders and lead to gorgeous & natural hair.
