UK homes are notoriously poorly insulated. Areas you should look at for energy saving are lofts (fit thermal or foam insulation to floors and roofs and fit a jacket to the water tank), chimneys (fit a chimney balloon to block unused chimneys and prevent heat loss), external doors and windows (fit double or triple-glazed units to eliminate draughts), internal doors (fit draught excluders), curtains (fit heavier ones, particularly in bedrooms), bare wooden or stone floors (buy rugs).
