Dr Hilary’s Over 60s Health Plan

For the landmark age of 60 and over, Dr Hilary recommends some key actions for a longer life.

Having a thorough health check at age 60+ is strongly recommended. The chief reason for this is that your chances of elimination and recovery are far greater when any symptoms of disease you might have that are detected in the early stages of development. There is, of course, the added bonus of peace of mind should these medical test prove negative.

Dr Hilary’s Checklist

  • Exercise is one of Dr Hilary’s key priorities for a longer life. Many adults aged 65 and over spend 10 or more hours lying or sitting down, making them the most sedentary age group in the UK. However, inactivity increases the risk of falls, obesity, heart disease and early death. Physical activity can help over 60s remain healthy, energetic and independent as they grow older.
  • Osteoporosis, a condition that causes bones to become brittle, is most common in women aged 50 and above. If you show signs of the condition, a DEXA bone scan may help determine if you have the condition or are at a high risk of developing it.
  • Your eyes should be examined for cataracts, aged-related macular degeneration and retinopathy.
  • Both men and women should have their blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, height, weight and BMI checked over the age of 60.
  • A full audiological assessment is highly recommended, as there are 10 million people in the UK with hearing loss, four million of whom are currently undiagnosed. Most of them are in the over-50s age bracket.
  • Over 60s should also take the opportunity to have an occult blood test that examines three samples of stools for blood.  This is an NHS screening programme and the tests are sent to each individual every three years.
  • A questionnaire should reveal alcohol consumption, and treatments the patient takes, including complimentary therapies and what level of exercise they are regularly taking.
  • Problems with weight, sleep, and any mental health issues should be addressed at this time.
  • Family history can be explored, smoking habits can be discussed, and this is a wonderful opportunity to ask about sleep about work related problems, stress and whether there is a history of anxiety and depression in your family.

Happy Retirement
Providing you are in good health, retirement offers a good opportunity to rediscover new interests that your career left you no time to pursue. For example, if you haven’t had the pleasure of travelling the world, now is your chance to visit new places and explore different cultures. Many travel companies offer packages for seniors, which means you can get the most out of the experience for an affordable price. However, before booking your flights make sure you are covered by a suitable travel insurance policy, particularly if you have any mobility issues that may affect your policy.
