A conservatory can add value and utility to any home, but older models may need an upgrade – the experts from Green Space UK explain how
Why are conservatories hot in the summer and cold in winter?
Conservatories that are hot during the summer and cold in winter are usually made out of glass and polycarbonate, which means they are not as well insulated as the rest of the home. These materials do not keep heat well and turn your conservatory into a chilly room in winter and into an overwhelmingly hot greenhouse when the sun is out. The older your conservatory is, the more likely you are to have low energy efficiency levels. However, technology has improved substantially and if your conservatory is 20 years old or more, its double glazing won’t be up to the same standards as modern double or triple glazing.
What is U-Value?
U-value or thermal transmittance is the rate of heat loss through any type of building element, including conservatory roofs. The lower the U-value, the better! Polycarbonate and glass conservatory roofs have a higher U-value, meaning they lose heat quickly in winter and also let in too much heat during the summer. A Green Space UK roof has a U-value of 0.29, which means it has excellent insulation properties and is more efficient than polycarbonate conservatory roofs!
How do Green Space UK roofing panels work? What are they made from?
Our opaque panels excel in conservatory insulation as they are composed of lightweight but sturdy aluminium and lined with 75mm of high-density foam insulation. This innovative design not only ensures remarkable insulation properties but also actively regulates the temperature, allowing you to use your conservatory all year round. Having opaque panels doesn’t mean your conservatory will be dark either, our panels are glossy white on the underside which helps to reflect light back inside!

Are they made to measure?
Yes! Our panels are made to measure for a bespoke conservatory roof experience. Every conservatory is different, but our roofs are designed as a like for like replacement. We specifically take time to measure your existing framework and panels and make sure we custom make ours to fit, saving time on installation!
How effective are they at regulating temperature?
To measure the efficiency of our panels, we use U-value, which is the rate of heat loss through building structures, including conservatories. The lower the U- value, the better the material is at insulating! For example, 4mm Polycarbonate material has a U- value of 3.8. 25mm polycarbonate material has a U- value of 1.4, while triple glazing has a U- value of 1.2 and solar glazing has a U- value of 1.
Green Space UK panels boast a U-Value of 0.29, meaning they are more energy efficient than polycarbonate, triple glazing and solar glazing!

Do they reduce noise as well as regulating temperature?
Conservatories are often the noisiest room in the home. Glass and polycarbonate materials can make the sounds of rain or hail sound a lot louder. Our panels can help reduce noise as well as regulate the temperature in your conservatory, making a much cosier and quieter space. How does this work? Due to the thickness of the insulation material and aluminium, you can expect the sounds of weather to be more subtle as the insulation acts as a barrier, preventing sounds from echoing. The aluminium is also strong enough to withstand damage from hail, for a longer lasting roof!
How long do they take to measure and fit?
Typically, the time between your first chat with us and the installation date is 4-6 weeks. During the first stages of getting your quote, our surveyors will come to you and measure your existing panels one-by-one, assess your framework and work out the exact costings before leaving you with a free, written no obligation quote. This process takes around one or two hours but allows a much quicker installation of up to a day!
Is there a choice of colours and styles?
Yes! At Green Space UK, we offer a range of styles and colours for you to choose from. You can match your existing conservatory frame or try out a different colour or style. We aim to get the colour preferences you want, so let us know if you have any particular colour in mind and we can help.
