Golden Globes Return With a More Diverse Approach

The Golden Globes, the movie and TV awards presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and widely seen as predictors of Oscars success, returned to TV on Tuesday 10th after an ignominous scandal last year.

Big winners were The Banshees of Inisherin which won three major prizes, and Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical The Fabelmans which won Best Drama Film.

Taking about Banshees of Inisherin, which won Best Comedy or Musical Film and Best Screenplay, as well as Best Comedy Actor for its star, Irish actor Colin Farrell said “I never expect my films to find an audience, and when they do it’s shocking for me.”

TV winners included school comedy Abbott Elementary, Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon and satirical dark comedy The White Lotus .

Last year’s Golden Globes ceremony was not televised after controversy regarding the racial profile of its voting members and presenters. This year the ceremony was televised, with first-time host Jerrod Carmichael commenting “I’ll tell you why I’m here, I’m here because I’m black.” His performance met a mixed reception with some commentators saying that his jokes, including one about the death of Whitney Houston, were in bad taste.

Awards

With a new presenter and promises of more ethnic diversity in its voting membership, the Golden Globes returned to TV, and managed to persuade back some of the stars. Kevin Costner, who won best actor in a drama series for Yellowstone, said beforehand he was “so sorry” he wouldn’t attend because of the major flooding currently affecting California.

Other winners attending either in person or by video link included:

Colin Farrell, reuniting with director Martin McDonagh and co-star Brendan Gleeson from previous film In Bruges, who won the Best Comedy Actor award

Steven Spielberg, named Best Director for The Fabelmans, which follows a young boy, loosely based on Spielberg himself, who falls in love with film-making

Michelle Yeoh, named Best Musical or Comedy Actress for her part in Everything Everywhere All at Once

Jennifer Coolidge, recognised for her performance in the dark comedy series The White Lotus

Austin Butler, Best Film Drama Actor for his portrayal of Elvis Presley in Elvis

Cate Blanchett, Best Drama Actress for her performance in Tár

Angela Bassett, Best Supporting Actress winner for her performance in Wakanda Forever

Zendaya, Best TV Drama Actress for Euphoria

Ke Huy Quan, Best Supporting Actor for Everything Everywhere All at Once

Tracy Morgan presented the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Award, an outstanding achievement honour, to Eddie Murphy, who referenced the Oscars slap controversy as he gave advice to younger actors in his speech. “To achieve success, prosperity and longevity… you just do these three things,” Murphy said. “Pay your taxes, mind your business, and keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out of your mouth.”

There was a surprise win for Argentina’s 1985 in the best non-English language film category, beating RRR, Decision to Leave, and the Oscar-tipped All Quiet on the Western Front.

And in an unexpected development, actor Sean Penn introduced a message from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who said that it was “clear” that the “tide was turning” in the Russian invasion of his country, and that Ukraine would be triumphant in its struggle.
