Decking can add value and utility to your property. The experts from AB Building Products explain the options
What sort of decking projects could you probably DIY, and what would need professional help?
Nearly all domestic garden landscaping projects could be DIYed. Do as much research as you can, but it’s certainly possible if you have the time, tools and resources. Always seek professional help when installing decking on roof terraces and balconies – there are strict building regulations that should be met, and a professional will be able to guide you and make sure load bearing weights are taken into account.
When are decking tiles a good alternative to decking planks?
Because there are so many upsides to ceramic decking (decking tiles), it’s almost always the best choice compared to decking planks. The boards are extruded, but they are still comparatively heavy to aluminium, so the only time you might choose aluminium is when weight is a consideration. The boards are designed for balconies and terraces, so they can be used anywhere. No other material on the market will provide the durability, longevity, anti-slip, and low maintenance properties that Exadeck will. It’s also a great choice for homeowners who are conscious of their carbon footprint, as it’s an eco-friendly option.

Can you put decking over block paving or patio?
You can install decking on top of block paving and a patio. When installing on either, you have to make sure firstly the base is flat to be able to lay your rails on top of the block paving or patio. If the base is not flat then you will need to use a pedestal and rail system to create your new floor level before fitting the boards.
What are the biggest mistakes made when undertaking a decking project?
The majority of mistakes we see are due to assumptions. That’s why we ask lots of questions about your project, to make sure everything is taken into consideration.
The biggest mistakes I see include:
• Not knowing what the FFL is (finished floor level)
• Not checking the existing levels of an area before installation
• Forecasting costs before you obtain a quote. Don’t set your final budget until you have quotes. Our team are more than happy to help you understand the costs so that you can budget accordingly. Contact us for pricing before setting your final budget, so you can allocate funds accordingly.
• Not allowing for wastage
What are the different types of material used in decking? What are the advantages of ceramic?
There lots of different types of decking including timber, aluminium, composite, fibre cement and ceramic. Ceramic boasts a huge range of advantages over other types of decking, including durability, high anti-slip ratings, and low maintenance. It’s also extremely weatherproof, through ice and hot weather, making it safe for walking on in bare feet. It’s also an eco-friendly choice, which is something that is increasingly important to our customers.

What range of colours and finishes are available in ceramic decking?
We have six different wood finishes stocked in our UK warehouse, and we can make-to-order over 60 different finishes including marble and stone effects. The timber finish is by far our most popular finish – it looks so real and suits so many different types of spaces. We can also supply matching indoor tiles, if you want to achieve a seamless indoor to outdoor living space.
How do I maintain decking and how long does decking last? Do you have to paint decking every year?
Regular cleaning will help you keep your decking pristine. Exadeck is manufactured to guarantee a water absorption rate of <0.5%. As a result, dirt doesn’t penetrate the boards. It remains on the surface. Sweep leaves and debris, and clean using a soft-bristled brush, gently washing the surface. Ceramic decking requires minimal maintenance.
Our boards come with a 25-year warranty. In comparison, timber decking requires annual maintenance, and it’s not unusual to replace timber or composite boards within 3-5 years. Most composite decking requires sealing and timber decking requires painting every 12-24 months to keep it in tiptop condition.
How much is ceramic decking and how does it compare to composite?
Ceramic decking costs ~£89 per SqM (inc VAT). Composite decking is slightly less, but when you factor in the ongoing costs of maintenance, resealing boards, replacing boards and/or hiring professionals to undertake the maintenance, your time, and eventually, replacing the entire decking, then composite decking can become much more expensive.
Ceramic decking is much better value long-term. We offer a 25-year warranty, but realistically, due to the production methods, ceramic has the potential to last a lifetime.

Does decking add value to property?
Properly installed, yes, decking will add around 5-10% onto the value of your property. You are effectively creating an outdoor living area.
