How long does the surgery take and what is the recovery time?
A total knee replacement is a major procedure and patients will be in hospital for three or four days, while full recovery will take between six and nine months. Partial knee resurfacing has a much shorter recovery time requiring only two nights in hospital and the joint is immediately able to bear weight and be mobile. Recovery is complete within six to eight weeks and we encourage patients to enjoy the full range of physical activity such as golf and tennis after surgery.
How effective are the surgeries?
Knee replacement surgery and partial resurfacing of the knee are rated as one of the most effective healthcare interventions we can make in terms of relief of pain and patient quality of life. Knee surgery on a complex joint requires particular technical skill and surgeons nowadays are specifically trained to deal with these cases to produce effective outcomes. It’s also important to think about your after care and making sure the hospital you have your surgery at has appropriately trained surgeons, nurses and physiotherapists.
Are there any risks of complications?
With any significant surgery there are always risks of complications, such as deep venous thrombosis or infection. The rates of complications however are significantly diminished when there is an expert surgeon and team in attendance and when the hospital has experience of complex surgery and rehabilitation. Fortunately, complications with knee surgery are rare and reversible and treatable.
