Netflix Reveals Release Date for Fifth Season of The Crown

Streaming giant Netflix has revealed that the fifth season of popular royal drama, The Crown, will premiere on Wednesday 9th November 2022.

The upcoming season will star several new actors and actresses with the likes of Imelda Staunton, who takes over from Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II, Jonathon Pryce as Prince Philip, replacing Tobias Menzies, Dominic West as King Charles III, replacing Josh O’Connor, and Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana, taking over from Emma Corrin.

In Staunton’s ‘first royal address’, she praises her predecessors Claire Foy and Olivia Colman for their performances as Queen Elizabeth II.

“I’m delighted to be inheriting the role of Queen Elizabeth from two outstanding actresses,” Staunton said. “I will do my upmost to maintain the very high standard that they set. Hopefully I look calm, collected and capable. My stomach, meanwhile, is doing somersaults.”

The release date was announced during Netflix’s TUDUM global fan event, which also previewed several other popular shows including sneak previews of the third season of Bridgeton and the fourth season of You.

A teaser trailer has been released, showing the scene of Princess Diana and King Charles III, then Prince Charles, being prepared for their separate interviews.

Additionally, a minimal poster has been revealed showing the edge of a gilded picture frame on a cracked wall suggesting the disintegration of certain relationships within the Royal family.

The season is set to illustrate the Royal family throughout the 1990s and will be the penultimate season of the drama which will end at season six, with production for the final season already underway. It was suspended for a day earlier this month following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, and again on the day of her state funeral.

“The Crown is a love letter to [the late Queen] and I’ve nothing to add for now, just silence and respect,” said creator Peter Morgan at the time. “I expect we will stop filming out of respect too.”

The Crown Seasons 1-4 are currently available to stream on Netflix.
